When you look at a birth chart for the first time, perhaps your own, you may find it overwhelming and completely confusing. I will show you six very simple steps to get a handle on what all those lines and symbols mean so that you can begin to understand your chart. You need: First you need a chart for this step-by-step exercise. If you don’t have one, you can download one from the web. I downloaded this one from Astrolabe. A more detailed chart will have the same basic components. A hand-drawn chart should have at least what is shown here. You also need: A blank piece of paper and a pen. Note: To get your bearings, take a look at the overall shape. In Western Astrology birth charts (=natal charts) are circular. The two red arrows I have added show that we read the chart in a counter-clockwise fashion. The red dot in the middle symbolizes earth. Check: Verify the accuracy of the birth data. This includes the name, the birth place, the birth date and the birth time. Here I used the name “Jane Sample” and made up the birth information. In your own case, this step is extremely important. You would never want to begin to interpret a chart that is not accurate. | ![]() |
