Read A Birth Chart In 6 Steps – 1

When you look at a birth chart for the first time, perhaps your own, you may find it overwhelming and completely confusing. I will show you six very simple steps to get a handle on what all those lines and symbols mean so that you can begin to understand your chart. You may need to scroll down to see everything presented here.

  1. Introduction – The Overall Picture

  2. The Four Components in Every Chart

  3. Label the Four Points of the Cross

  4. Name the Ascending Sign (Ascendant)

  5. Number the Houses

  6. Identify the Planets

You need: First you need a chart for this step-by-step exercise. If you don’t have one, you can download one from the web. I downloaded this one from Astrolabe. A more detailed chart will have the same basic components. A hand-drawn chart should have at least what is shown here.

You also need: A blank piece of paper and a pen.

Note: To get your bearings, take a look at the overall shape. In Western Astrology birth charts (=natal charts) are circular. The two red arrows I have added show that we read the chart in a counter-clockwise fashion. The red dot in the middle symbolizes earth.

Check: Verify the accuracy of the birth data. This includes the name, the birth place, the birth date and the birth time. Here I used the name “Jane Sample” and made up the birth information. In your own case, this step is extremely important. You would never want to begin to interpret a chart that is not accurate.
